Basheerah Ojedeyi is a promising young Nigerian professional who had just achieved a significant milestone in her academic and professional life: her induction as a Radiographer (often abbreviated as Rad.). Her commitment to the healthcare profession marked her as an individual dedicated to serving humanity, a sentiment echoed by her professional body.
In the days immediately following her celebratory induction ceremony, Basheerah prepared to start the next phase of her career, an internship in Osogbo, Osun State. This involved a long journey from Sokoto State, a common route for young graduates moving to their postings.
The Nightmare Journey and Ransom Negotiation
On a Sunday, Basheerah Ojedeyi departed Sokoto for Osogbo. The journey, typically lasting around 18 hours, took a tragic turn on the following Monday. She contacted her family around 2 p.m. to inform them that the vehicle she had boarded had developed a fault at Mokwa, Niger State, and that they were waiting for it to be fixed. This was the last time the family heard from her directly.
Her phone became unreachable shortly after. Initial concern grew into panic, and by Tuesday morning, the family’s worst fears were confirmed: they received a call from kidnappers.
The abductors’ initial demand was an outrageous ransom of N200 million, accompanied by a chilling threat to kill her if the money wasn’t produced. The Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN) publicly condemned the abduction, stating that the cruel act had turned a moment of great joy into a nightmare and highlighting Basheerah’s “boundless potential and a promising future in service to humanity.”
The family was devastated by the demand, which was far beyond their means. Following desperate appeals and negotiations, the kidnappers reportedly lowered the ransom to N10 million and gave the family an ultimatum of one week to raise the amount. The incident prompted the ARN to call on all levels of government and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to secure her safe release.
