Zubeen Garg was born on November 18, 1972, in a small town called Tura, located in Meghalaya, India. Though he came into the world far from the spotlight, he would go on to become one of the most loved and respected artists in India, especially in Assam, where people saw him not just as a singer, but as a symbol of pride.
His real name was Zubeen Borthakur, but he later chose the name “Garg” from his family’s Brahmin heritage. Interestingly, he was named after the famous music conductor Zubin Mehta, which shows that music was already part of his destiny.

Zubeen grew up in a home where music and poetry were part of everyday life. His father, Mohini Mohon Borthakur, was a poet who wrote under the name Kapil Thakur, and his mother, Ily Borthakur, was a singer. She was the one who first taught him how to sing. With such a background, it’s no surprise that Zubeen started singing when he was just a little boy.
He went to school in Assam and later joined college, but he didn’t finish his degree. His heart was always in music, and he decided to follow that path instead of chasing a regular job.
Zubeen’s first big break came with his Assamese music album Anamika, which became a huge hit in the early 1990s. People loved his voice, and soon he became a household name in Assam. But it was the Hindi song “Ya Ali” from the movie Gangster in 2006 that made him famous all over India. That song touched millions of hearts and showed the world what Zubeen could do.
He didn’t stop there. Over the years, Zubeen sang thousands of songs in more than 40 languages, including Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and even tribal languages. His voice had no boundaries, it reached people from all walks of life.
